Weekly Recommendations

Saturdays for me have always been a sacred thing. This is when I fully get into reflecting on what is going down in my life and what is coming up. I clean my room. I listen to my favorite songs. I write lists for everything in my life. I've decided that I am also going to now use Saturdays to document the things that have truly inspired and lifted me the week before. Now, something you may not know about me is that I tend to find inspiration in the oddest places. And I fall in  love with things and people and ideas IMMEDIATELY. I've been known to tell people that I am obsessed with them upon shaking hands. I'm not sure where it comes from, but I'm definitely an all or nothing, head over heels, total romantic and completely passionate person. With that - here's my first installment of my weekly recommendations.

1.Russell Simmons, Do You!
Ok - So I haven't even finished reading this book and I've already texted about a dozen people and told them to pick this up right away. Russell Simmons has been the main inspiration for my career since I was in the 10th grade. When I think of the impact he has made on our culture it humbles me to no end. I am in awe of the way he speaks his mind, demands nothing but the best of the people he surrounds himself with and himself, can admit his weakenesses and his over all dedication to making our planet a better one. I honestly don't think there would be a Kanye or a Jay or a Lil Wayne if it wasn't for this man, and I just would never want to live in a world where those men's music wasn't in my life. Sayin.

2. Woody Allen

I watched a few of his movies this week after Lizy told this hilarious story that involved an Annie Hall reference. I'm always attracted to awkward people, I just feel like if I were born in Brooklyn 30 or 40 years earlier I definitely would have hung out with this guy at some point. He's definitely a lil pervy and weird, but some of my favorite people in the world are too. And it's kinda amazing how he puts it all out there.

3. Friday Night Lights

This is TV on another level. Something truly embarrassing for me to admit to is that I have become slightly weird over high school football. It started off with Two A Days where I was totally in love with Alex, and thought about ways to maybe go down to Albama and try and get to know him a lil.
But this show has put more over the top. There is something really sexy about a person who is passionate about ANYTHING. There are just those people that are so totally moved and excited and driven and STOKED about something that when they talk about it they give off this energy that could keep you warm at night if you are paying attention. This show is full of those speeches that make you want to go out and change the world, or at the very least play your hardest to win the game. To play with heart. And holy eff, Tim Riggens. There are no words. (I'm kinda bummed cause in this season he's a senior so if the show gets picked up again he won't be on again. Maybe he'll return as a coach or something though.) If you hit that link though you can watch the whole season for free. That's kinda amazing.

Another show with those amazing speeches that make you want to change the world is The West Wing. Super amazing show. Both shows have writing and casts that are definitely beyond anything I thought TV was capable of. I really hope that Studio 60 comes back soon. I miss Aaron Sorkin being a part of my life.

4. Sunshine.
I just love it. Can't get enough of it. So much so that I am ending the recommendations here so I can go for a nice long run.

I'd love to hear feedback and know what is making everyone else stoked out there. Hit me up.

I totally love Annie Hall, one of those movies that I watch with a cup of tea on rainy days. Match Point is definitely my fave. movie of his though.

I'm pretty stoked on more new Veronica Mars episodes starting this Tuesday. Not gonna lie, this season hasn't been as amazing as the first two - but I get so wrapped up in it.

I haven't read Russell Simmons' book yet, but I really want to. Have you read Kevin Liles' Make It Happen? It is a truly inspiring book, about how he went from intern to president at Def Jam. Now he's the Executive VP at Warner Music Group. Check that one out.

Friday Night Lights is my (not so) secret guilty pleasure. A friend got me hooked and I just can't stop watching. It's so... I don't know... you just want to go hang out with them and you feel like you're in their lives. And, um, Kyle Chandler is kind of a fox, and when I say "kind of," I mean "REALLY."

Not gonna lie, for some reason when I saw Russell Simmons my mind read Richard Simmons. I was like, wait a tick, everyone loves goofy spandex, but there is a big difference between fro's and bro's and you couldn't be talking about the workout guru. Sure enough I came back to reality (duh). Anyways, I love West Wing, or any show that has a lot of wit to it. I was always a big Frasier fan. As for Friday Night Lights, I've never seen it, nor do I plan to. Sure, it can be pretty impressive when someone is passionate about something, but I live in Texas where high school football is life. I guess it just always seemed disappointing to me because I would see people basically throw away their free education away because they figured they would go pro or get a full-ride bc of football anyways. And the teachers who would bump player's grades up so they could play was frustrating. Not because I was jealous but because they would never learn anything and let's face it, they didn't all make it to the NFL. But I guess that's my over-analyzed viewpoint on a tv show. Kind of makes me sound lame, haha. Anyways, love the post, a good read during a break in the day.
